Elon Musk’s SpaceX Successfully Launches Crew-2 Mission to the International Space Station
In the early hours of April 23, Elon Musk’s SpaceX successfully launched the Crew-2 mission to the International Space Station (ISS) from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The mission is part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, which aims to launch astronauts from American soil on American spacecraft.
The Crew-2 mission consists of four astronauts: NASA’s Shane Kimbrough and Megan McArthur, European Space Agency’s Thomas Pesquet, and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s Akihiko Hoshide. They will join seven other astronauts currently aboard the ISS, including three who arrived on SpaceX’s Crew-1 mission in November 2020.
The Crew-2 mission is the first time SpaceX has reused a Crew Dragon spacecraft and Falcon 9 rocket for a crewed mission. The spacecraft, named Endeavour, was previously used for the Demo-2 mission, which launched NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley to the ISS in May 2020.
